Where 10G belongs

Not every desktop needs 10 GbE, but backbone links frequently benefit from higher capacity. Common examples include MDF-to-IDF uplinks, server/storage connectivity, high-density Wi-Fi aggregation, camera/NVR traffic and switch-to-switch links.

UniFi's current lineup includes the Cloud Gateway Fiber, which Ubiquiti describes as a desktop 10G Cloud Gateway with integrated PoE switching, as well as higher-capacity rackmount gateway families.

Wi-Fi 7 Changes the Edge

Faster wireless can expose a slow wired uplink.

Current UniFi enterprise/flagship APs include models with 10 GbE uplinks. That does not mean every deployment needs 10G to every AP, but it does mean new cabling and switch designs should consider the actual AP model and expected traffic instead of assuming 1 GbE forever.

Ubiquiti lists the U7 Pro XGS as a 10G, 8-stream Wi-Fi 7 access point. High-performance APs make upstream switch ports, cabling category and backbone design more important.

AP → horizontal cable → patch panel → access switch → 10G/25G backbone → gateway/server/storage.
