MDF and IDF Network Closets: Why Good Design Matters

MDF: Main Distribution Frame

The MDF is commonly the primary telecommunications/network distribution location. It may contain carrier handoffs, firewalls, core switching, patch panels, fiber terminations, servers or other central infrastructure depending on the site.

IDF: Intermediate Distribution Frame

An IDF serves another area, floor or part of a large building. A backbone—often fiber—links the IDF to the main network, and horizontal copper runs fan out from the IDF to nearby devices.

Why not run everything back to one room?

Large buildings quickly run into practical pathway and distance constraints. Distributed telecommunications rooms can shorten horizontal runs, reduce giant cable bundles and simplify local growth.
