Why copper is everywhere
Twisted-pair Ethernet is practical, familiar and supports Power over Ethernet, making it ideal for workstations, phones, cameras and access points. A single cable can carry both data and power to many endpoint types.
Why fiber is different
Fiber transmits information using light. It does not carry electrical power to the endpoint, but it offers long-distance capability, high bandwidth and immunity to electromagnetic interference that affects copper conductors.

Single-mode or multimode?
That decision depends on distance, transceivers, existing standards at the client, backbone strategy and lifecycle expectations. A professional design also considers strand count and spare capacity; replacing a backbone later can be far more disruptive than adding reserve strands during the original pull.
The practical design pattern
Many commercial environments use fiber between network rooms and copper from each IDF to nearby endpoint devices. That combines a high-capacity backbone with economical PoE-capable horizontal cabling.
